San Sebastian Festival Films Sweep Goya Awards

Eight films showcased at the esteemed San Sebastian Festival received recognition at the 38th edition of the Goya Awards, organized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences of Spain.

SAN SEBASTIAN, February 11 (ZIZ): Eight films showcased at the esteemed San Sebastian Festival received recognition at the 38th edition of the Goya Awards, organized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences of Spain. With a total of 21 awards distributed, the event celebrated excellence in Spanish cinema.

The standout of the night was “Society of the Snow,” which clinched the City of Donostia/San Sebastián Audience Award for Best Film, earning twelve Goya awards including Best Film and Best Director for J.A. Bayona.

Among the winners, “O Corno/The Rye Horn,” directed by Jaione Camborda and developed under the Ikusmira Berriak residency, secured accolades including the Best Newcomer Actress award for Janet Novás.

“Carme Elias’s Mientras seas tú/While You Are You,” directed by Claudia Pinto, took home the Goya for Best Documentary Feature Film after its world premiere at the San Sebastian Festival.

Víctor Erice, recipient of the Donostia Award at Cannes for “Cerrar los ojos/Close Your Eyes,” saw his film honored with the Best Supporting Actor award for José Coronado.

Other notable winners included “20,000 especies de abejas/20,000 Species of Bees,” which received awards for Best New Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress.

“Aunque es de noche/Even Though It’s Night,” presented in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section, was recognized with the Goya for Best Fiction Short Film.

“The Eternal Memory,” directed by Maite Alberdi and selected for Perlak after winning accolades at Sundance, clinched the Goya for Best Ibero-American Film.

Lastly, “Anatomie d’une chute/Anatomy of a Fall,” part of Perlak after its Palme d’Or triumph at Cannes, was bestowed with the Goya for Best European film.

The ceremony also featured a special recognition as actress Sigourney Weaver, recipient of the Donostia Award in 2016, received the International Goya for her contributions to the film industry.
