“Aitamaako’tamisskapi Natosi: Before The Sun” offers an intimate portrayal of a young Siksika woman, Logan Red Crow, and the profound familial connections as she prepares for the formidable Indian Relay, one of the world’s most perilous horse races. Set amidst the golden plains of Blackfoot Territory, the documentary delves into Red Crow’s journey, navigating the male-dominated Indian Relay Racing world, where riders seamlessly leap bareback from one horse to another. The film poignantly explores the deep ties between humans and animals, family and community, tradition and modern life.

Having premiered at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and receiving the esteemed Big Sky Award, the film has captivated audiences at renowned festivals like Hot Docs, where it earned a nomination for Best Canadian Feature Documentary. The documentary has garnered multiple accolades, including the Generation Next Audience Choice Award at CIFF, the Best Doc Feature at the American Indian Film Festival, and a nomination for the Jean-Marc Vallée DGC Discovery Award for director Banchi Hanuse.

Starring Logan Red Crow, Allison Red Crow, Racey BigSnake, and Jayme BigSnake, directed by Banchi Hanuse and edited by Tanya Maryniak, the film was shot in Siksika Nation, Tsuut’ina, Îyâxe Nakoda, Blackfoot Territory, Enoch Cree Nation, and Casper, Wyoming. Executive Producers include Carey Newman and Izzy Pullen, produced by Mike Wavrecan, with Christina Willings serving as the TELUS originals Senior Production Executive.
