BERLIN, Feb 1 (ZIZ): The upcoming Berlinale in 2024 will witness a talented International Jury determining the recipients of the prestigious Golden and Silver Bears. This year’s Competition features 20 films vying for the coveted awards, with the winners set to be revealed at the Berlinale Palast on February 24.

Leading the jury is the accomplished Lupita Nyong’o, renowned for her roles as an actor, director, producer, and writer. Nyong’o, who clinched the 2014 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in “12 Years a Slave,” has since become a globally recognized figure, captivating both audiences and critics alike. The jury also includes actor and director Brady Corbet (USA), director Ann Hui (Hong Kong, China), director Christian Petzold (Germany), director Albert Serra (Spain), actor and director Jasmine Trinca (Italy), and writer Oksana Zabuzhko (Ukraine).

The International Jury, curated annually by the Artistic Director, will bestow various awards, including the Golden Bear for Best Film (given to the film’s producers), the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize, the Silver Bear Jury Prize, the Silver Bear for Best Director, the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance, the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance, the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay, and the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution. Notably, no ex aequo awards are permitted, and the jury cannot grant more than one prize to the same film, except for acting awards, which may be conferred in addition to other accolades such as the Golden Bear or Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize.

Below are brief profiles of the distinguished members of the International Jury for 2024:

  • Lupita Nyong’o (Kenya / Mexico) – Jury President:
    Lupita Nyong’o, born to Kenyan parents in Mexico City and raised in Kenya, achieved acclaim for her breakout role in “12 Years a Slave.” Beyond her acting career, Nyong’o is a New York Times bestselling author and has made significant contributions to both the Broadway stage and the literary world. Currently involved in various projects, including a podcast on non-fictional storytelling from the African diaspora and a series based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “Americanah,” Nyong’o continues to be a prominent figure in the film industry.
  • Brady Corbet (USA):
    Renowned for his diverse roles in the film industry, Brady Corbet has transitioned from acting to directing. His debut feature film, “The Childhood of a Leader,” received accolades at the Venice International Film Festival, and his subsequent work, “Vox Lux,” garnered a nomination for a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Currently working on his third feature film, “The Brutalist,” Corbet continues to make a mark as both a director and actor.
  • Ann Hui (Hong Kong, China):
    Ann Hui, a filmmaker from Hong Kong, has a rich cinematic background, with her films receiving recognition at international festivals. Having won the Golden Horse Award for her debut feature, “The Secret,” Hui’s works, including “Summer Snow” and “Ordinary Heroes,” have been featured at the Cannes Film Festival and Berlinale. Hui’s extensive accolades include six Hong Kong Film Awards and three Golden Horse Awards for Best Director.
  • Christian Petzold (Germany):
    Christian Petzold stands out as one of the distinguished directors in contemporary German cinema. With a career marked by awards such as the Silver Bear for Best Director for “Barbara” and the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize for “Afire,” Petzold’s contributions to cinema extend beyond Germany. Notable actresses, including Nina Hoss and Paula Beer, have received Silver Bears for their performances in Petzold’s films.
  • Albert Serra (Spain):
    Albert Serra, a Spanish director with a background in literature, has garnered acclaim for films such as “Honour of the Knights” and “Story of My Death.” His work, “The Death of Louis XIV,” exhibited out of competition at Cannes, and “Liberté,” featured in Un Certain Regard, showcase Serra’s unique artistic vision. The director’s extensive retrospectives at esteemed institutions underline the impact of his contributions to the cinematic landscape.
  • Jasmine Trinca (Italy):
    Born in Rome, Jasmine Trinca made her mark in the film industry with roles in films like “The Son’s Room” and “Romanzo Criminale.” Recognized with awards such as the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the Venice Film Festival, Trinca has collaborated with esteemed directors globally. Her directorial debut, “Marcel!,” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, showcasing her versatility in the industry.
  • Oksana Zabuzhko (Ukraine):
    Oksana Zabuzhko, a prominent Ukrainian writer, has contributed significantly to literature with over 20 published books spanning poetry, prose, and non-fiction. With awards such as the French Legion of Honour and the Angelus Central European Literary Award, Zabuzhko’s works, including “The Museum of Abandoned Secrets” and “The Longest Journey,” have received international acclaim, providing a poignant perspective on the historical context of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
