LONDON, Dec 8 (ZIZ): Sight and Sound, the acclaimed international film magazine under the BFI umbrella, has declared the outcomes of their esteemed Best Films of the Year survey for 2023. This year, Martin Scorsese’s sprawling crime saga, “KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON,” ascends to the top position, marking Scorsese’s first numero uno placement in the Sight and Sound year-end ranking. His 26th directorial venture meticulously explores the intricate human dynamics entangled within a larger conspiracy against the Native American Osage Nation. Notably, this compelling drama, having premiered in the UK at the 67th BFI London Film Festival, stands as a pivotal cinematic event of 2023.

The results, a culmination of votes from approximately 100 leading film critics worldwide, positioned Scorsese’s opus at the pinnacle of cinematic achievements for the year. “KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON” delves into themes of greed, murder, and the core of American identity, leaving an indelible mark on audiences and earning accolades, especially for Lily Gladstone’s commanding performance.

Expressing his gratitude for the recognition, Martin Scorsese remarked, “I’ve been so heartened by the response to Killers of the Flower Moon. To have been able to make this picture, at this time in my life, and to see it so appreciated by so many, and by the Osage community in particular. . . for me, it’s grace.”

Sight and Sound’s Editor-in-Chief, Mike Williams, highlighted the significance of Scorsese’s accomplishment, citing the film’s profound portrayal of American identity and Scorsese’s unwavering advocacy for the art of cinema over five decades.

The eclectic top 10 list features a diverse array of cinematic experiences, including Jonathan Glazer’s Cannes-awarded “THE ZONE OF INTEREST” securing second place, and Celine Song’s debut feature “PAST LIVES” clinching the third spot. Noteworthy is the presence of seventeen films by female filmmakers in the top 50, showcasing the vibrant contribution of women directors in this year’s cinematic landscape.

The complete listing of Sight and Sound’s Best Films of 2023, featuring a spectrum of international voices and cinematic achievements, will be available in their upcoming winter 23/24 edition, accessible digitally on December 11 and hitting newsstands by December 14.
