CIFF's Leadership Change: Steve Schroeder Bids Adieu, Katherine Penhale Takes Helm Temporarily

CALGARY, AB – November 27, 2023: Today marks a significant transition for the Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF) as it announces the departure of Steve Schroeder, the Executive Director for the past 12 years. Schroeder will step down from his role on December 15, 2023. CIFF’s Board of Directors has appointed Katherine Penhale, the current Operations Director and Chief of Staff, to take over as Acting Executive Director.

Reflecting on his tenure, Schroeder expressed gratitude for the enriching experience at CIFF. “What a privilege and opportunity my time with CIFF has been! I’m proud of everything we’ve accomplished. Schroeder’s arrival at CIFF marked a pivotal moment as he navigated the organization through financial adversity. His strategic emphasis on prioritizing audiences and filmmakers contributed significantly to the festival’s growth, sustainability, and acclaim.

Under his stewardship, CIFF witnessed remarkable milestones, including the introduction of large-scale events, record-breaking revenues and attendance, expanded year-round programming, attainment of Oscar-qualifying status for short films, and a heightened role in championing Alberta’s screen industry. Notably, his innovative approach in 2020 sustained the festival’s size, artistic scope, and audience engagement during the pandemic.

Amish Morjaria, President of CIFF’s Board of Directors, commended Schroeder’s pivotal role, stating, “His ability to align the organization’s vision and objectives has been integral to our success and current standing. We extend our best wishes to Steve for his dedicated service.”
