SLIFF 2023: Highlights from the 32nd Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival

St. Louis – November 22, 2023: The 32nd Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF) unfolded from November 9 to 19, 2023, marking a significant milestone as it inaugurated its first year at the esteemed Hi-Pointe Theatre. This move marked a new chapter for Cinema St. Louis (CSL), which had acquired the iconic venue in January.

Boasting a legacy dating back to 1992, SLIFF continued its impressive growth streak, experiencing a notable 19% surge in attendance compared to the previous year. Over the eleven-day extravaganza, nearly 21,000 cinema enthusiasts immersed themselves in public screenings, engaging post-film Q&As, enriching masterclasses, and captivating special events, all celebrating the artistry of film.

Underlining its dedication to nurturing emerging talent and fostering a love for filmmaking among the younger generation, SLIFF’s free Cinema for Students program in 2023 catered to an impressive 12,124 local students, marking the second-highest participation since its establishment in 2003.

The festival presented an impressive selection of 275 films, including 49 insightful documentary features, 53 captivating narrative features, and an astonishing 170 shorts competing in the prestigious Oscar-sanctioned Shorts competition, offering glimpses into diverse filmmaking creativity.

A notable highlight was the ninth edition of the Race in America: the Black Experience spotlight, comprising 29 impactful film programs delving into multifaceted racial experiences. Many of these screenings were open to the public, fostering crucial conversations about race.

Moreover, SLIFF showcased an additional 20 films through the Cinema for Students program, affirming its commitment to education and inclusivity, exposing young minds to cinema’s enchantment and diverse storytelling.

The festival transcended boundaries, presenting films from 32 countries and spanning 39 languages. It proudly showcased a selection of international films submitted for the 96th Academy Awards in 2024, exemplifying the universal language of film that unites audiences worldwide.

The festival’s vibrant kickoff paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop in collaboration with the Saint Louis Art Museum, featuring DJ Charlie Chan Soprano from the renowned group Run DMC. A thought-provoking panel discussion explored hip-hop’s cultural impact, culminating in a screening of the iconic 1990 film, “House Party,” illustrating hip-hop’s enduring influence on popular culture.

As the festival concluded, it celebrated with grandeur, featuring Trackstar the DJ from Run the Jewels and presenting the prestigious SLIFF Awards. The event included an enlightening conversation with distinguished filmmaker Reginald Hudlin, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his profound contributions to entertainment and representation through film, television, and comics.

Additionally, the festival recognized four other outstanding filmmakers for their contributions to cinema:

– Alexander Payne received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
– Barbara Kopple, a two-time Academy Award winner, was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
– Rick Goldsmith, known for his documentaries, received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
– Signe Baumane received the Women in Film Award for her impactful work in animation.

The festival also presented various juried competition and audience-choice awards, recognizing exceptional works across different categories, underscoring the diverse talent showcased at SLIFF.
