Producer Janet Yang to Continue Leadership; Prominent Industry Figures to Assume Officer Roles

Los Angeles, CA – August 2, 2023: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has re-elected esteemed producer Janet Yang as its president. The decision was made by the organization’s Board of Governors, recognizing Yang’s exceptional leadership and contributions to the film industry.

The Board of Governors also announced several other industry figures who will assume officer positions:

  • DeVon Franklin, Vice President (Chair of the Equity and Inclusion Committee)
  • Lynette Howell Taylor, Vice President (Chair of the Awards Committee)
  • Howard A. Rodman, Vice President/Secretary (Chair of the Governance Committee)
  • Kim Taylor-Coleman, Vice President (Chair of the History and Preservation Committee)

Academy CEO Bill Kramer expressed excitement and welcomed the newly elected board officers. Under the continued leadership of Janet Yang, he believes this talented group of governors will further elevate the work of the Academy’s global membership and the film community. The Board aims to highlight the industry’s rich history, facilitate meaningful dialogue, and continue advancing equity and inclusion across all aspects of the organization.

Yang is no stranger to the Academy’s leadership role, as she begins her second term as president and her fifth year as a Governor-at-Large. Her election as Governor-at-Large in 2019 and 2022, nominated by the sitting Academy President and elected by the Board of Governors, showcases her significant influence and reputation within the film community. Joining her in continuing their officer roles are Lynette Howell Taylor and Kim Taylor-Coleman, who were re-elected.

Notably, this marks the first officer term for Howard Berger, Brooke Breton, Tom Duffield, and Howard A. Rodman. Bonnie Arnold previously served as an officer in 2019-20, while DeVon Franklin assumed the role in 2021-22.

Janet Yang’s illustrious career as a film producer includes notable works such as “The Joy Luck Club,” “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” “Zero Effect,” “High Crimes,” “Dark Matter,” “Shanghai Calling,” and the Oscar®-nominated animated feature “Over the Moon.” Her expertise has been recognized with an Emmy® for the HBO film “Indictment: The McMartin Trial.” Since 2002, Yang has been an active member of the Academy’s Producers Branch, previously serving as vice president and chair of the Membership Committee and, subsequently, the Membership and Governance Committee.

In accordance with Academy regulations, board members may serve up to two three-year terms, consecutively or non-consecutively. After completing their terms, a two-year hiatus is required before they become eligible for up to two additional three-year terms, with a lifetime maximum of 12 years of service. Officers, on the other hand, serve one-year terms, with a maximum of four consecutive years in any one office.

The Academy’s Board of Governors plays a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s strategic vision, ensuring its financial stability, and fulfilling its mission. With the newly elected officers assuming their roles, the Academy is well-positioned to advance its mission and continue its commitment to the film industry’s growth and prosperity.
